NPT means National Pipe Taper

NPT threaded are widely used for joining pipe. Since the tapered threads (wider diameter at the base of the threads, similar to a trapezoid) the male fitting will be tighten when it is  threaded into the female fittings. 

How to determining NPT size:

Sizing NPT is based on the nominal pipe diameter (you can understand it is out diameter of a tube/pipe), and not the outside diameter (O.D) of the threads . For example: A 1/2" NPT male has an outside thread diameter of approx. 3/4 inch, but as stated the correct NPT size is 1/2", including the counterpart female.
